He headed the department from 1994 until 1999, during which time he also became Director of the Centre of Research for Biomedical Engineering (CREB) of the Technical University of Catalonia. In this role he led the process that resulted in the creation in 2003 of the Catalan Reference Centre for Bioengineering (CREBEC), which transformed into IBEC at the end of December 2005.

Prof. Planell is a Member of the Steering Board and Coordinator of the Research programme of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering of the Biomedical Research Networking Center in Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN); a Sherpa of the High-Level Group on Key Enabling Technologies on Industrial Biotechnology, European Commission, in charge of defining the long term strategy of the EU to promote innovation; and was Vice-president of the European Society for Biomaterials from 2005 to 2009. He is a Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering, and in 2010 was elected Member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona. He received the “Distinció per a la Promoció de la recerca” from the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2001 and the “Ciutat de Barcelona” prize in 2006. Prof. Planell is currently editor-in-chief of the Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine and was editor-in-chief of the Journal of Applied Biomaterials and Biomechanics until 2007.
