Josep Samitier, head of the IBEC nanobioengineering group, was appointed Acting Rector of the University of Barcelona (UB) on 21 April.
Samitier, who was previously the UB’s vice-rector for Innovation and International Research Programmes, will take up the post vacated by Màrius Rubiralta, who was recently appointed Secretary of State for Universities at the Ministry for Science and Innovation.
During his long teaching and academic career Samitier has made key contributions to the field of nanobiotechnology. Since the setting up in 2003 of the Nanobioengineering Laboratory of the then Bioengineering Reference Centre of Catalonia (CREBEC), he has combined his research in nanobioengineering (specialising in the development of integrated platforms for disease diagnosis) with his desire to promote and bring greater cohesion to the interdisciplinary area of nanomedicine. In this regard, Samitier has coordinated the Spanish Nanomedicine Platform since it was established in 2005 and has also been deputy director of the CIBER (Networking Biomedical Research Centre) in Biomaterials, Bioengineering and Nanomedicine.
